Plastic Slat Floor in a Poultry House

Plastic Slat Floor in a Poultry House

Key points
  • A plastic slat floor is the raised surface in a floor house. Birds stand on it. Manure falls through.
  • Breeders and floor layers usually take a slat band under the nests, with litter beside it. Full slat is the other layout.
  • The board is polypropylene. Support spacing and the step up from litter are set on the drawing, not from a catalogue size.

Weifang Splendid lays the slat where the birds spend the day: under the nests, along the drinker and feeder lines, and anywhere staff walk the row. The litter strip, if there is one, stays beside it. The board is not a cage floor and it is not laid on bare soil without a frame.

Where it sits

A breeder or floor-layer house is often part slat, part litter. The slat band runs the length, nests sit on it, and the litter is the scratch side. A common split is about two thirds slat and one third litter, but the split follows the nest row and the feeder loops, not a fixed fraction. Full slat covers the whole floor when the house has no litter zone and manure is taken from below.

The step from litter onto the slat has to be one a hen will take. Too high and she lays in the litter. On a breeder house the same step is what a male uses. Support beams sit under the panels. Spacing follows the panel and the load, including a person walking the row. Walk on the beams. A panel is made for birds. A hard knock or a jump in the middle of a span is how a board cracks with no mark on top.

What the gap does

Polypropylene does not rot the way a wood slat does, and it does not rust. Gaps are sized so manure drops and a foot does not. Chick panels use a tighter opening than a breeder panel. Weifang Splendid matches the opening to the bird on the drawing. A wet gap that clogs is usually a drinker leak or a panel laid out of level, not a board that is too open.

What to watch at fit

Polypropylene moves with temperature. A long run needs a gap at the wall so a hot afternoon does not buckle the row. Panels interlock. The frame is level before the first board goes down. Height of the support is part of the nest step and part of how manure is cleared underneath. A raised floor with room to work below is one build. A low frame over a scrape path is another. Both use the same panel. The difference is the legs.

What to send

House length and width, breeders or floor layers, part slat or full, and whether manure is scraped below or lifted out at the end of the flock. Weifang Splendid marks panel count and support spacing from that.

FAQ

Where does the plastic slat go?

Under the nests and the lines in a floor house. Litter, if any, stays beside the band.

Part slat or full slat?

Part slat when the house keeps a scratch area. Full slat when manure is taken from below and there is no litter zone.

Can staff walk on it?

On the supported lines. The panel is sized for birds. A jump in mid-span can crack a board.

What should I send?

House size, breeders or floor layers, part or full slat, and how manure leaves.
